UK Coroner Urges Regulatory Changes Following Death Linked to Excessive Vitamin D Intake

by Krystal

A recent BBC report has shed light on the tragic death of 89-year-old David Mitchener in the UK, attributed to very high levels of vitamin D. Mr. Mitchener had been consuming vitamin supplements for at least nine months prior to his demise, leading to concerns over the safety of supplement usage.

The coroner in Surrey, UK, investigating Mr. Mitchener’s death, has called for changes to supplement packaging regulations. The investigation revealed that Mr. Mitchener’s vitamin D levels were alarmingly high at 380, resulting in vitamin D toxicity, hypercalcemia, and subsequent cardiac and kidney failure.

Assistant coroner Jonathan Stevens expressed apprehensions regarding the potential serious risks associated with excessive vitamin supplement intake. He highlighted the absence of mandatory labeling requirements regarding such risks on supplement packaging.

In response to the coroner’s concerns, both the Department of Health and Social Care and the Food Standards Agency (FSA) have been contacted. A spokesperson for the DHSC assured that they would thoroughly assess the coroner’s findings and respond accordingly.

The National Health Service (NHS) guidelines recommend a daily intake of 10 micrograms of vitamin D for most individuals, with a maximum limit of 100 micrograms per day. Children and infants have specific dosage recommendations to prevent adverse effects.

Harvard Health emphasizes moderation in vitamin D supplement intake, warning against exceeding 4,000 IU per day without medical guidance to avoid toxicity-related complications.

Dr. Susan Oliver, in a tweet, highlighted the significance of acknowledging the serious risks associated with excessive vitamin D intake. She advocated for supplement packaging to outline these risks prominently to raise awareness among consumers.

The unfortunate incident involving Mr. Mitchener underscores the importance of regulatory measures and consumer awareness regarding the safe usage of vitamin supplements. Addressing these concerns is crucial to prevent similar incidents and ensure public safety.
