The town of Heanor in Derbyshire is mourning the loss of Val Lawrence, a cherished local gym owner and renowned bodybuilder, who passed away in April at the age of 77. Lawrence, who continued his fitness pursuits well into his retirement years, was celebrated for his vibrant energy and dedication to fitness.
His life was honored on Thursday at a crowded funeral service held at St Lawrence’s Church on Church Street, where about 250 attendees gathered, with some unable to find space inside due to the large turnout. Val Lawrence was the proprietor of Val’s Gym in Heanor, a place he made a local institution through his passion for fitness and community.
Shaun Hogg, a friend and long-time gym member, shared his emotions with the BBC, saying, “It’s a very tough day for myself and many others around the area, especially in Heanor. He was a great man. He just gave so much to everybody, touched a lot of people in so many ways.” Hogg, who met Lawrence in 1991, highlighted his lasting impact, noting his rigorous approach to fitness, diet, and personal discipline.
Danny Twells, another friend of Lawrence, spoke to BBC Radio Derby about the profound influence Val had on his life: “I was fat, overweight, money-hungry. He punched me in the belly and said if you want to get rid, come to my gym.” Twells described Lawrence as a “larger-than-life character” who was passionate about fitness and not driven by monetary gain.
Val Lawrence was remembered not only for his fitness expertise but for his readiness to engage with anyone, regardless of their background, seeing potential and value in every individual. His legacy in Heanor as a deeply respected and beloved figure continues to resonate throughout the community.
