Mombasa, Kenya – The 14th meeting of the African Taskforce on Food and Nutrition Development (ATFFND) convened from April 3-5, focusing on enhancing nutrition across Africa. Held in Mombasa and hosted by the Kenyan government and the African Union Commission, in partnership with the African Development Bank’s African Leaders for Nutrition (ALN) initiative, the event marked a significant stride in addressing continent-wide nutritional challenges.
Under the theme “Collaborating for Effective Implementation of the African Union Nutrition Policies and Strategies,” participants engaged in dynamic discussions. They explored educational approaches, nutrition strategies, and pathways to sustainable development, aiming to forge a cohesive plan of action.
A major highlight was the discussion led by ALN leaders on the Multisectoral Policy Framework and Financing Target for Nutrition. This framework represents a crucial advance in tackling the complex nutrition issues that plague the continent.
Reflecting on the conference’s importance, Inas Mubarak, Head of the Health Systems, Diseases, and Nutrition Division at the African Union Commission, emphasized the need for urgent and continued action. “I am glad this meeting was a chance to develop key concrete actions to accelerate progress. I call on all of us to sustain that commitment and momentum and collectively work to fast-track the implementation of these actions and recommendations,” Mubarak stated.
George Ouma, Coordinator for the African Leaders for Nutrition, highlighted the meeting’s role in progressing nutrition policies and funding frameworks. “This meeting marks a significant moment in the progression of a multisectoral policy framework and the setting of financing targets. As we enter the consultative phase with the Member States, it’s a critical opportunity for stakeholders to directly shape the future discourse of nutrition policies, programming, and financing in Africa,” said Ouma.
The event also included a Coordination and Document Review meeting from March 28 to April 1, which showed considerable progress towards establishing a Multisectoral Nutrition Policy Framework and Funding Target for Nutrition Investment in Africa. This pre-meeting was crucial in refining the tools and methodologies that will guide further stakeholder engagement and action.
Participants reviewed key initiatives such as the ALN initiative and the Continental Nutrition Accountability Scorecard. Additionally, technical guidance was provided on the African Union Nutrition Champion Work plan for 2024-2026, with an emphasis on measurable outcomes.
The success of the 14th ATFFND meeting was fueled by the participation of a diverse array of stakeholders from various sectors, exemplifying a true collaborative effort toward a common goal. This unity underscores the power of collective action in overcoming Africa’s nutrition challenges.
With renewed energy and commitment, stakeholders left the meeting poised to make significant strides in improving nutritional outcomes across the continent, driving progress toward a healthier, more prosperous Africa.
