The Center for Military Veterans, Service Members and Families at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) continued its commitment to supporting veterans by hosting a special “Nutrition & Benefits” Seminar on Tuesday, April 16.
Held at Quinlan-Hammond Hall, the seminar brought together various state and local veterans organizations, uniting a community dedicated to addressing food insecurity among veterans.
Maj. Gen. Jeff Hammond (U.S. Army-ret.), Director of the Veterans Center, emphasized USM’s tradition of service, stating, “The University of Southern Mississippi has always been known as a place where dreams come true because our staff, faculty, and friends believe foremost in serving others.” He underscored the significance of the event, made possible by the generosity of the Bob Woodruff Foundation, in aiding South Mississippi veterans and their families facing food insecurity challenges.
The seminar agenda included presentations on nutrition and healthy eating, a $250 grocery gift card giveaway, a nutritional cookbook giveaway, as well as comprehensive information on resources and benefits available to veterans.
David “Red” Rayborn, VA Certification Specialist at the USM Veterans Center, led the organization of the seminar, assisted by Lakinta Griffin, Workforce Case Manager at Oak Arbor, and Marika Baliko, Interim Director of MS Balance of State Continuum of Care and Deputy Director of Mississippi United to End Homelessness (MUTEH).
Rayborn highlighted the importance of recognizing veterans’ sacrifices, expressing, “Everything we can do for veterans will never be enough. I personally feel veterans are way too taken for granted and way too underserved.” He emphasized the significance of events like this in showing gratitude to veterans and acknowledging their crucial role in shaping the nation.
Marika Baliko commended the USM Veterans Center for its initiative in hosting the seminar, affirming the commitment of MS Balance of State Continuum of Care to ending veteran homelessness. She stated, “We recognize the sacrifices made by veterans in service to our country, and we are dedicated to ensuring they have access to safe and stable housing.”
The event not only celebrated veterans’ service but also highlighted the importance of community support and solidarity in improving the lives of those who have served.
