Bend, OR – With the arrival of spring, allergy season is in full swing. Experts advise individuals with allergies to begin taking medication proactively to manage symptoms.
“Starting allergy medication before symptoms develop is crucial,” said Dr. Adam Williams, allergy specialist with Summit Health. “Delaying treatment until symptoms become severe makes it more challenging to achieve effective control.”
Current Allergens and Forecast
Juniper trees are the primary culprits of allergy symptoms in Central Oregon at present. Their pollination season typically extends through the end of April.
“While this year’s allergy season is expected to be average overall, it’s important to note that average pollen counts can still cause significant discomfort for many individuals,” Dr. Williams added.
Upcoming Allergens
As the season progresses, deciduous trees and grasses will become the main sources of allergens during the summer months. Sagebrush, tumbleweed, and other weeds will follow suit in the fall.
Advice for Allergy Sufferers
To minimize allergy symptoms, Dr. Williams recommends the following:
Start taking allergy medication now, even if symptoms have not yet appeared.
Use nasal sprays specifically designed for allergies.
Avoid outdoor activities during peak pollen hours.
Keep windows closed during high pollen days.
Wear a mask when mowing the lawn or performing other outdoor tasks that may stir up allergens.
By following these measures, individuals with allergies can proactively manage their symptoms and enjoy the spring and summer seasons.
