Australian Workers Report Lower Wellbeing Compared to Global Peers, Study Finds

by Krystal

Recent research indicates that Australian workers are reporting lower levels of wellbeing, standing at 67%, in contrast to their global counterparts, who report a slightly higher figure of 72%. These findings stem from the Qualtrics Employee Experience Trends report, which draws insights from over 2,000 employees in Australia. The report highlights a decline in engagement, wellbeing, inclusion, and intent to stay among Australian workers.

Vicky Drakousis, Chief People & Culture Officer at Allianz, shares positive feedback regarding the organization’s wellbeing strategy. Drakousis emphasizes the high levels of engagement observed within the company and notes that Allianz remains a leader in this space. The organization’s commitment to employee wellbeing is an integral part of its broader people strategy.

Allianz’s approach to wellbeing aims to support both the physical and mental health of its employees. According to Drakousis, the philosophy is rooted in the belief that healthy and happy employees lead to positive engagement, resulting in favorable customer outcomes that ultimately support the business.

Recognized as an Excellence Awardee at the Australian HR Awards 2023 for the Best Health and Wellbeing Programme, Allianz places a particular focus on mental health initiatives. Drakousis highlights the launch of mental health first aid officers within the organization, addressing the growing recognition that workplace incidents extend into the realm of mental health.

Beyond the workplace, Allianz acknowledges external factors impacting mental health, such as domestic violence. The organization has established a domestic violence support network, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to employee wellbeing.

Drakousis emphasizes that Allianz’s definition of wellbeing is broad, encompassing financial and social wellbeing, career opportunities, and learning opportunities. The company employs various strategies, including senior leaders modeling and storytelling, yoga and mindfulness sessions, and online tools, to foster a culture of belonging linked to wellbeing.

In response to identified psychosocial risks, Allianz launched a psychosocial risk survey to pinpoint prevalent areas of concern. Drakousis notes that addressing psychosocial risks, particularly customer aggression in contact centers, is a key focus for the organization this year.

Acknowledging the far-reaching impact of the wellbeing strategy, Drakousis underscores its role not only in employee engagement but also in talent retention and attraction. The organization recognizes that individuals considering joining the company factor in the impact on their wellbeing, emphasizing the critical role it plays in shaping organizational culture and attracting top talent.
