Bristol’s chapter of Mental Health Mates, a national initiative supporting individuals with their mental health, is celebrating its fifth anniversary. Led by Rachel Rayner, the group organizes walks in and around the city, providing a supportive environment for participants.
Describing the group as an “eclectic bunch,” Ms. Rayner emphasized the community’s strength in supporting one another. Mental Health Mates Bristol invites anyone grappling with mental health challenges to join in a weekend walk, fostering a sense of camaraderie and understanding.
Ms. Rayner acknowledged the initial difficulty some may face in taking the first step outside but highlighted the group’s evolution into a supportive family over the past five years. “Stepping outside and having that first ‘hello’ with a group of strangers can be difficult,” she said. “Once you’ve taken that first step, it does get easier.”
Opening up about her own mental health struggles, Ms. Rayner expressed gratitude for the group, stating, “This group has shown me it’s ok to talk, and that I am not alone.” She also shared the group’s commitment to nature walks, rain or shine, resulting in memorable and humorous stories.
Founded by author, journalist, and campaigner Bryony Gordon in 2016, Mental Health Mates began with an open invitation on social media to join a walk in Hyde Park. Since then, the initiative has expanded to over 150 walks across the UK.
Ms. Rayner emphasized the relaxed and inclusive nature of the walks, focusing on conversation and connection rather than physical exertion. “We take a really gentle pace. It’s not about getting out of breath, huffing and puffing. We want people talking and connecting and making friends,” she explained, welcoming everyone to participate.
The anniversary walk will commence at The Downs Café at 14:00 GMT, inviting individuals to join in for a weekend “jaunt” and celebrate the supportive community that Mental Health Mates Bristol has cultivated over the past five years.
