Waypoint Maritime Launched as Pioneering Not-for-Profit Addressing Mental Health in Maritime Industry

by Krystal

Dr. Pennie Blackburn, a consultant clinical psychologist, has established Waypoint Maritime, a community interest company aimed at addressing the crucial aspect of mental health in the maritime industry. In response to the growing awareness of the significance of mental health protection within this sector, Waypoint Maritime positions itself as the first and only not-for-profit company dedicated to maritime mental health.

With profits slated for reinvestment into furthering its social objectives, Waypoint Maritime aims to be a catalyst for positive change in the mental well-being of maritime professionals. Dr. Blackburn, who entered the maritime sphere seven years ago after a 25-year tenure in the public sector, charities, and international non-governmental organizations, brings a unique perspective, given her father’s background as a master mariner.

Dr. Blackburn emphasized the need for mental health approaches in the maritime industry to be grounded in best practices. She stated, “It’s fantastic that awareness of mental health and the unique challenges of life at sea has accelerated over recent years, but it is crucial that approaches to protection, promotion, and response are rooted in the best practice.”

Waypoint Maritime is poised to assist companies in achieving seafarer well-being compliance by offering technical guidance on formulating mental health policies. The company will also provide support in implementing best practices to foster well-being, engaging in practical project work, including stress risk assessments to prevent mental health issues. Moreover, it will offer training and guidelines for effective crew support following critical incidents on board, along with innovative approaches to seafarer assistance programs ensuring accessible and timely responses.

An essential aspect of Waypoint Maritime’s agenda involves evidence building. The company plans to develop, pilot, and evaluate new mental health programs, including initiatives focused on suicide prevention. This evidence-based approach aims to contribute substantially to the improvement of mental health in the maritime industry, fostering a safer and more supportive environment for seafarers.
