The conclusion of the annual “Biggest Loser” competition was marked by an awards ceremony on March 19 at the Yano Fitness Center, where participants celebrated their completion of the seven-week health and fitness program.
The program, hosted by the Armed Forces Wellness Center (AFWC) and the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (DFMWR), encourages participants to achieve and maintain a healthy weight and body composition through education and behavioral change.
Diane Thompson, a health educator at AFWC, emphasized that the Biggest Loser program goes beyond weight loss. It aims to foster a culture of health and wellness by reaching out to the community and encouraging sustainable, healthy behaviors.
“Incorporating sleep, physical activity, nutrition, and stress management is essential in creating a holistic approach to health,” said Thompson. “Each of these components plays a vital role in achieving long-term wellness.”
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Troy Gibson, assigned to U.S. Army Japan, cited his wife as his inspiration for joining the program. He also saw it as an opportunity to regain his fitness after a recent surgery.
“Through the classes, I learned a variety of techniques that helped me make healthier food choices and improve my physical and mental health,” Gibson explained.
Gibson’s dedication paid off, as he won the “Step Challenge,” while his wife was named the overall winner in the women’s category.
Maria Wallace, lead health educator at AFWC, noted that all participants benefitted from the program. She highlighted the feedback received, including reduced stress levels, improved energy, and better-fitting clothes.
“Participants have shared that they’ve gained valuable knowledge, which they applied to enhance their health and fitness journey,” Wallace said. “Resources like the AFWC and DFMWR play an essential role in helping individuals achieve their fitness goals.”
Thompson also echoed this sentiment, noting that the pursuit of good health is an ongoing journey.
“The path to health is a lifelong commitment,” she concluded.
