In an inspiring tale of passion and perseverance, Ipsita Swain, a practicing advocate turned fragrance entrepreneur, has carved a unique path in the world of perfumery. Founder of the fragrance brand Brew Beauty, Swain has seamlessly blended two seemingly distinct fields—law and perfumery—into a successful business venture.
What began as a teenage fascination with perfumes has blossomed into a full-fledged brand, where every fragrance tells a compelling story. Swain recently spoke to My City Links, sharing insights into her journey, the challenges of balancing dual careers, and the key moments that led to the creation of Brew Beauty.
From Advocate to Entrepreneur: A Seamless Transition
Swain, who has always been drawn to both the legal and fragrance worlds, describes her career shift as a natural progression. “When you love something deeply, it doesn’t feel like ‘balancing,’ it just flows,” she explains. “Law fuels my mind, and perfumery fuels my soul. Each keeps me excited and engaged in its own way, and somehow, it just works.”
Despite the stark contrast between her roles as an advocate and a fragrance entrepreneur, Swain is able to find harmony between the two. “I don’t feel overwhelmed because I genuinely enjoy both,” she adds.
The Leap: Turning a Passion into a Business
Swain’s transition from law to launching Brew Beauty was sparked by a moment of clarity. “I’ve been a collector of perfumes for years, but it was always just a hobby. One day, I realized—why wait? I had no plan, no strategy, just a gut feeling and a lot of faith,” she recalls. The decision to take the leap came without hesitation, and the universe, she believes, aligned to support her.
“I’ve always believed that when you want something sincerely, the universe moves things around to make it happen,” Swain notes.
Legal Expertise and Entrepreneurial Success
Swain’s legal background has proven to be invaluable in her entrepreneurial journey. “Patience, strategy, and trust in the process are essential in both law and business,” she says. “Being a lawyer has taught me how to navigate challenges, and my legal knowledge has helped me handle everything from trademarks to business registrations.”
Moreover, her legal training enables her to handle the complexities of business operations with ease, ensuring that all the necessary steps are taken to protect her brand.
The Personal Touch: Brew Beauty’s Name and Inspiration
The name Brew Beauty carries deep personal significance for Swain, drawing from her interest in occult sciences. A longtime tarot enthusiast, she sees parallels between her legal work, tarot readings, and fragrance creation. “All three give me a sense of independence, power, authority, and control,” she says. “When I create perfumes, it feels like crafting little bottled spells that make people feel something magical and boost their confidence.”
For Swain, intuition plays a key role in both her law practice and her work as a perfume creator. “Tarot isn’t just a hobby for me—it’s about tapping into my inner consciousness and helping people heal,” she explains. “The belief my tarot clients have in me, along with my work in law and fragrance, empowers me in different ways.”
Overcoming Challenges and the Role of Divine Timing
Despite launching her fragrance brand with international influences, Swain has faced little resistance in bringing her vision to the Indian market. “I’ve never struggled with anything I’ve truly wanted. When I work for something with sincerity, things just align,” she reflects.
Her success has also been aided by her strong community ties. Swain, an Odia, shares that the concept of bhaichara, or brotherhood, played a significant role in the early success of Brew Beauty. “A logistics company approached me as soon as word got out about my brand, offering their support,” she says, attributing this to divine timing and the support of her community.
A Perfume that Represents Her Journey
When asked to describe a fragrance that represents her journey as both an advocate and a perfume creator, Swain envisions a scent of “sultry bourbon vanilla laced with creamy white florals”—a reflection of both strength and elegance.
How to Order
Since its launch in December 2024, Brew Beauty operates primarily through Instagram direct messages (@brewbeauty.in). A website is in development, but customers can currently place orders through DMs.
For Ipsita Swain, the path from law to perfumery has been nothing short of magical—a blend of passion, intuition, and divine timing that has led her to create a fragrance brand that captures the essence of who she is.
