A freelance gym instructor has resigned from Anytime Fitness in Swindon after claiming he was repeatedly unpaid and ignored by the gym’s management.
The instructor, who wishes to remain anonymous, had been employed at the Old Town branch for over five years. He alleges ongoing issues with delayed payments dating back to 2022, culminating in his decision to leave the gym in February 2025 after withholding his class due to outstanding wages.
Speaking to the Swindon Advertiser, the instructor said, “It’s disappointing, but I’ve decided to leave Anytime Fitness. I’ve been promised continuous payment, and yesterday was the last acceptable deadline.”
He explained that despite his efforts to contact Anytime Fitness’ head office, his calls and emails went unanswered, and he was not provided with the franchise owner’s contact information to follow up on the issue directly.
“As a self-employed worker, I shouldn’t be treated this way,” he added.
This instructor is not the only one to raise concerns. According to messages shown to the Swindon Advertiser, a second freelance instructor also reported delayed payments despite reassurances from the gym management. The instructor threatened to stop teaching if the outstanding wages were not paid by Monday.
A third former staff member also shared their experience of consistent late payments and issues with excessive tax deductions, which were never resolved by management.
One email obtained by the Swindon Advertiser from a 2022 communication with an Anytime Fitness manager referred to the pay system as an “absolute nightmare.”
The instructor who recently quit his role was eventually paid after several weeks, following a public complaint on social media. However, he stated that the payment was made without any direct communication from the gym owners, leaving him feeling “ignored” after five years of service.
Anytime Fitness has yet to respond to the Swindon Advertiser’s request for comment regarding these ongoing issues.
