David Beckham, the iconic soccer star, has made a major shift in his fitness routine as he celebrates his 50th birthday, prioritizing strength and balance over the leg-focused training that dominated his athletic career. According to his longtime trainer Bobby Rich, Beckham’s current fitness goals are simple: remain lean, strong, and pain-free.
“It’s about fine-tuning his biomechanics on the major moves and staying consistent,” Rich explains. At 50, Beckham’s focus has evolved beyond maintaining a legendary set of legs, which were instrumental throughout his soccer career. Now, he is investing more in his core and upper body to ensure better overall body stability and to alleviate years of strain from high-level competition.
Core Strength for Stability, Not Just Six-Pack Abs
Beckham has adopted a new perspective on core training. While many fitness enthusiasts target their abs for a sculpted look, Beckham’s focus is on strengthening his core muscles to improve overall support and reduce the risk of back pain. “The strength work I do for my core and upper-body helps with the backaches that I’ve got,” he says. “When I was playing, the only strength work I did was on my legs. It was never really upper-body.”
This shift to training deeper core muscles, including the transverse abdominis, obliques, posterior core muscles, and glutes, has not only enhanced Beckham’s balance and stability but has also improved his ability to move more fluidly.
A New Focus on Upper-Body Strength
Incorporating more upper-body and core exercises into his routine has led to noticeable changes in Beckham’s physique. The soccer legend, who spent decades maintaining a lean body for speed and agility, now sports a stronger, more muscular frame. “I never had pecs until I met Bob [Rich],” he says with a laugh. “You could say I’ve gone up a few cup sizes as a result.”
While the humorous remark reflects Beckham’s newfound upper-body strength, it’s clear he is committed to his fitness goals as he ages. His workout regimen includes more pushups, pull-ups, and varied strength exercises—efforts that have given him a more balanced physique and bolstered his overall fitness.
The Four Pillars of Beckham’s Fitness Routine
Beckham’s comprehensive training plan revolves around four major components:
Calisthenics: Most days, Beckham’s routine includes basic bodyweight exercises like pull-ups, hanging knee raises, and pushups. Rich, who has been instrumental in the soccer star’s fitness transformation, emphasizes these foundational movements for core strength and overall fitness. Though Beckham jokes about Rich’s consistent approach, the variety in tempo, reps, and sets keeps the workouts engaging.
Strength Training: While Beckham’s soccer career centered on lower-body strength, he now incorporates full-body strength training into his regimen. The foundation of his routine includes exercises like deadlifts, squats, and bench presses. Rich adds variety by changing the type of equipment used—alternating between barbells, kettlebells, and dumbbells to keep the workouts fresh.
Cardiovascular Training: A fan of diverse fitness challenges, Beckham enjoys activities like SoulCycle, boxing, and Barry’s Bootcamp. However, his favorite cardio workout at the moment is playing padel, a fast-paced hybrid of tennis and squash. Beckham plays padel three times a week while in Miami, using it as an opportunity to boost his cardio, test his agility, and spend quality time with family and friends.
Recovery: Recovery plays a crucial role in Beckham’s fitness routine. Post-workout, he refuels with a homemade protein shake consisting of coconut water, two bananas, almonds, and ice, with a dash of creatine. Additionally, he relies on acupuncture and cupping to address any muscle discomfort or injuries from his soccer career. Beckham also swears by contrast therapy, alternating between sauna sessions and ice baths, to enhance circulation and reduce inflammation.
As Beckham looks ahead to his 50s and beyond, his commitment to staying fit and pain-free is evident. While his workouts have evolved over time, the soccer legend remains focused on achieving a balanced, strong, and sustainable level of fitness for years to come.
