As students settle into campus life at Illinois State University (ISU), many seek ways to begin or maintain their fitness journeys. The student-led organization CHAARG (Changing Health, Attitudes, and Actions to Recreate Girls) offers a welcoming environment for young women looking to embrace their wellness goals.
Founded in Spring 2022, CHAARG at ISU has grown into a thriving community that promotes physical and mental health through fitness activities and social engagement. The group meets regularly to participate in local gym sessions, organizes small-group workouts, and hosts monthly social events.
The primary mission of CHAARG is to empower women by helping them feel more confident in the gym, encouraging them to step outside their comfort zones, and supporting them in discovering fitness activities they enjoy.
Jessie Jones, a founding member and ambassador for CHAARG at ISU, expressed her deep connection to the organization. “It’s where I found my home here at ISU. It opened doors for me to explore different outlets, and I’m proud to bring this initiative to campus,” said Jones, who served as the founding treasurer.
Jones’s commitment to the group is evident as she reflects on its impact: “It feels great to help so many women find their fitness paths and become more comfortable in the gym.”
CHAARG’s weekly fitness classes provide members with a variety of workouts, from strength training to mindfulness exercises. This week, for example, the group collaborated with another registered student organization, Redbird MMA, to host a boxing session.
What sets CHAARG apart from other fitness groups on campus is its national reach and extensive support system. With a membership of 80 women, the organization fosters a sense of community and inclusivity. “As a nationally established club, we have the resources and guidance to achieve our goals,” said Jones. “It’s an amazing network that gives women the confidence and motivation to push their boundaries.”
Diana Gaucin, the club’s Vice President of Membership, manages recruitment and promotes events. She emphasized the positive environment CHAARG offers its members. “It’s a really comfortable space for everyone. Being part of this group has been a rewarding experience, and I feel accepted and encouraged to keep working on my fitness,” said Gaucin.
CHAARG memberships are available on a semester or annual basis, with semester memberships priced at $60. New members are invited to attend recruitment events at the start of each semester to explore the club’s offerings before committing. “You get the chance to meet incredible people, connect with like-minded women, and get a great workout in,” Gaucin said.
For those interested in joining or learning more, CHAARG’s social media and recruitment events provide an excellent introduction to the group’s activities and community spirit.
