On this year’s Hug Day, mental health experts highlight the profound impact that daily embraces can have on an individual’s emotional well-being. While often seen as a simple act of physical touch, hugs are far more than just a gesture—they can significantly improve mood, reduce stress, and foster a deeper sense of connection.
Hugs are a powerful tool to combat feelings of loneliness and anxiety, offering a therapeutic form of emotional support. According to Archana Singhal, a counselor and family therapist based in Delhi, the act of hugging goes beyond physical touch. “When partners hug, it’s more than just an embrace—it strengthens their emotional bond. This physical connection triggers the release of oxytocin, commonly referred to as the ‘love hormone,’ which promotes feelings of affection, warmth, and connection,” she explains.
Oxytocin plays a crucial role in reducing stress, anxiety, and even blood sugar levels, contributing to better emotional health and well-being. For couples, regular hugs can enhance communication, offering a nonverbal form of support during challenging times. “Frequent hugs help reinforce the sense of partnership and mutual care, particularly in moments of stress or conflict, providing comfort and allowing couples to navigate challenges together,” Singhal adds.
The benefits of hugging extend far beyond romantic relationships, however. Bhavya Shah, a clinical psychologist at Saifee Hospital in Mumbai, emphasizes that embraces also play an essential role in familial bonds. “A warm hug can calm your nerves and create a sense of security,” says Shah. “It conveys presence and support, even when words fall short, and can foster trust and strengthen connections. What may seem like a simple act of kindness can have a lasting impact on emotional well-being.”
In addition to its physical benefits, hugging offers significant psychological advantages. Deekshaa Athwani, a consultant clinical psychologist at Fortis Hospital in Mumbai, underscores the role of physical touch in building psychological resilience. “Hugging fosters a sense of belonging and emotional support. During times of emotional distress, it can alleviate feelings of isolation, and over time, regular hugging helps to combat low self-esteem and insecurity,” she says. “Affectionate touch, including hugging, serves as a form of emotional regulation, providing comfort and stability.”
This Hug Day, experts encourage individuals to embrace the power of touch as a simple yet impactful way to boost their mental health and strengthen their relationships. Whether it’s a hug from a partner, friend, or family member, the benefits are undeniable—enhancing emotional connection, reducing stress, and promoting a sense of security.
