GI Group UK is leveraging its network of trained mental health first aiders (MHFAs) to assist employees dealing with loneliness and other mental health challenges. With a workforce of 500, the company offers both temporary and permanent roles across sectors such as industrial, manufacturing, food production, warehousing, driving, and distribution.
The company has prioritized the mental well-being of its employees by investing in a robust support structure. GI Group’s team of over 60 MHFAs plays a crucial role in identifying employees who may be struggling, ensuring they have access to a confidential support system. Additionally, the company’s head of learning and development is a certified MHFA trainer, further strengthening its mental health resources.
GI Group has also established an employee-driven equality, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) committee, with a dedicated focus on creating an inclusive, safe, and supportive work environment. The committee ensures that each employee has the opportunity to succeed and feels valued in their role.
Cindy Gunn, Group Head of People at GI Group, is set to complete her own MHFA training later this year. She emphasized that the company is committed to continuously expanding its mental health initiatives. “We have a range of resources available, and we are always seeking innovative ways to support our employees, both in the workplace and beyond,” Gunn said.
Among the initiatives introduced is the Let’s Talk Sessions, a series of staff-led discussions that cover 12 core topics, with flexibility to explore additional relevant subjects. These sessions aim to address sensitive issues, foster open communication, and create a supportive environment. Topics such as men’s and women’s mental health, imposter syndrome, and neurodiversity are regularly featured, all of which are linked to feelings of loneliness.
Additionally, GI Group has developed guides to assist employees in managing mental health challenges, as well as providing managers with tools to support teams. Topics such as LGBTQA+ inclusion, cancer support, and mental health awareness are featured, offering further advice for those who may be experiencing loneliness or isolation.
The company promotes flexible working arrangements across its branch network, encouraging regular meetings and teamwork to help reduce feelings of loneliness and isolation. This approach ensures that employees feel connected and supported, regardless of where they work.
Gunn believes that the world has become more disconnected since the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to an increase in isolation and mental health issues. “It’s more important than ever for employees to have access to the right resources and guidance to create a positive working environment,” she noted. “Our mission is to help those who are struggling and to drive positive change across the organization. We are committed to reducing mental health challenges and loneliness, ensuring our people feel secure, happy, and supported, whether at work or at home.”
GI Group’s ongoing efforts underscore its dedication to promoting mental health and well-being in the workplace, with a focus on adaptability and ongoing support for all employees.
