Children from Beoley First School and Alvechurch Middle School recently took part in Stress Box sessions, aimed at promoting mental well-being through a combination of boxing, meditation, and other therapeutic activities. The initiative, led by Liam Blackwood, founder of Stress Box, provided students with tools to better manage stress and enhance their mental health.
At Beoley First School, children across several age groups, including reception through to year four, participated in a range of activities such as guided meditation and boxing with designated partners. Rebecca Bartlett, the year two and three class teacher, highlighted the positive impact of the sessions on her students.
“It was very enjoyable, and all of our children took part,” Bartlett said. “The sessions had a really positive effect, and since the visit, the children have been using the techniques they learned during playtime. We would definitely recommend these sessions to other schools.”
In addition to boxing and meditation, students at Alvechurch Middle School also engaged in yoga and drumming activities, further broadening their approach to mental health. Liam Blackwood noted that many children at both schools had participated in Stress Box sessions before, making the experience even more meaningful for them.
“The sessions went really well; the children embraced them enthusiastically,” said Blackwood. “At Beoley, the children reported feeling much calmer, which was fantastic. The session at Alvechurch was tailored to older students, where we discussed strategies for managing stress and promoting good mental health. The opportunity to try drumming was also a unique and enjoyable experience for them, as not many children get to explore that.”
These activities are particularly timely, coinciding with Children’s Mental Health Week, which runs from February 3 to 9. Liam Blackwood, who also serves as the activities coordinator for the Birmingham Irish Association, is currently working on a wellness programme focused on fall prevention for the elderly. Stress Box has been a part of the autumn PSHE curriculum at Bromsgrove School since 2017, further solidifying its role in promoting mental well-being across various age groups.
