Health and Family Welfare Minister Ashok Singhal conducted a detailed review of the Health Department’s progress during a meeting at Janata Bhawan today. The minister underscored the growing concern over non-communicable diseases (NCDs), such as high blood pressure and diabetes, and the urgent need to strengthen the department’s digital infrastructure.
Singhal called for the creation of an integrated web portal to provide real-time updates on departmental schemes, health indicators, human resources, and other vital data. He emphasized the importance of making health information more accessible and transparent to the public.
The minister expressed deep concern about the rising prevalence of lifestyle-related diseases in Assam, warning that these conditions could evolve into an epidemic within the next decade if not addressed. He stressed the role of public awareness in promoting healthier lifestyles, including physical activity, balanced diets, and mental well-being.
As part of efforts to combat lifestyle diseases, Singhal instructed the Health Department to launch a state-wide campaign aimed at educating the public about prevention and management. He also called for a more equitable distribution of healthcare resources, directing the formulation of a policy to allocate doctors and health workers proportionally across districts, based on population size and healthcare needs.
In addition, Singhal urged the National Health Mission’s (NHM) media cell to publish a monthly newsletter. The newsletter will feature updates on health schemes, success stories, and key health indicators to increase public awareness.
The review meeting also highlighted the expansion of the Rashtriya Bal Swasthya Karyakram (RBSK). Singhal instructed the department to design a detailed, campaign-style implementation plan to broaden its impact. The review also covered ongoing NHM infrastructure projects, with Singhal stressing the need to complete existing projects before submitting new proposals. Other key discussions included the ‘Sugom to Durgom’ scheme for relocating doctors and health workers, the Universal Immunisation Campaign, and upcoming Special Immunisation Campaigns.
This comprehensive review underscores the government’s commitment to addressing health challenges, enhancing transparency, and improving access to healthcare services across the state.
