As airport looks continue to dominate social media, travelers are increasingly sharing their in-flight skincare routines. While long-haul flights are often an exciting experience, they also bring a common challenge: dry, irritated skin. The low humidity and reduced air pressure at high altitudes can wreak havoc on your complexion, leaving it dehydrated and dull. But fear not—beauty experts have simple and effective solutions to keep your skin glowing and refreshed throughout your journey.
Why Does Airplane Air Affect Your Skin?
According to Dr. Trupti D. Agarwal, a consultant dermatologist at Sir HN Reliance Hospital in Mumbai, moisture is essential during flights. “The low humidity and pressure in an aircraft can dehydrate the skin, causing dryness, irritation, and dullness,” she explains. “Moisturizing is the most important step when traveling to prevent these issues.”
Dr. Nirupama Parwanda, MD Dermatologist and founder of Zolie Skin Clinic in New Delhi, emphasizes that in-flight humidity can drop as low as 20%, which can lead to skin dehydration. Additionally, many airplane windows fail to fully protect against UV rays, making sunscreen application especially important during air travel.
In-Flight Skincare Routine
To maintain healthy, hydrated skin while flying, experts recommend the following skincare routine before, during, and after your flight:
Before You Fly:
Start your journey with a lightweight skincare routine that protects and nourishes. Dr. Parwanda advises cleansing your face with a hydrating formula to remove impurities without stripping away essential moisture. “Opt for a non-comedogenic moisturizer followed by a toner containing hyaluronic acid, which helps lock in moisture,” she suggests.
Next, apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to shield your skin from UV exposure, especially given that airplane windows may not fully block harmful rays. Seal in the moisture with a nourishing lip balm to prevent chapped lips during the flight. Dr. Parwanda also recommends avoiding makeup, as well as products containing AHA, BHA, or retinoids, which can increase skin sensitivity.
Mid-Flight:
To keep your skin hydrated throughout the flight, facial mists are an excellent option. Reapply your moisturizer and lip balm as needed to combat dryness. Dr. Agarwal advises staying hydrated by drinking water regularly and avoiding alcohol and caffeine, as both can contribute to dehydration.
Sitting for extended periods and consuming salty snacks may also lead to water retention, causing puffiness in the face and feet. Keep these effects in check by drinking plenty of water and getting up to stretch whenever possible.
After the Flight:
Once you’ve reached your destination, gently cleanse your face with a mild cleanser to remove any accumulated buildup. Dr. Parwanda suggests applying a hydrating sheet mask for an instant skin boost. For deeper hydration, she recommends a hyaluronic serum or a ceramide-based moisturizer to restore your skin’s moisture levels and calm any irritation caused by the flight.
By following these expert-recommended tips, you can ensure that your skin stays nourished and glowing, even while cruising at 30,000 feet.
