Health experts have issued a warning for patients with cardiovascular conditions to avoid exposure to extreme weather, citing potential risks to heart health.
According to Dr. Harshal R. Salve, an additional professor at the Centre for Community Medicine at AIIMS, New Delhi, sudden changes in temperature—whether extreme cold or heat—can disrupt cardiovascular function. “Exposure to extreme weather conditions without proper acclimatization can be harmful to those with cardiovascular risk factors,” Salve told IANS. He emphasized the importance of being aware of one’s cardiovascular health, particularly conditions such as high blood pressure, deep vein thrombosis, and uncontrolled diabetes, before venturing out into extreme temperatures.
Temperature Fluctuations Increase Risk of Heart Attacks
Cardiologist Dr. Ashwani Mehta, from a Mumbai-based hospital, further explained that winter months, in particular, pose a greater risk for heart attacks. “Fluctuating temperatures can spike blood pressure, increase sympathetic responses to these changes, and constrict the arteries,” Mehta said. These fluctuations, combined with increased platelet aggregation during colder months, can heighten the likelihood of heart attacks.
The cardiologist also recommended that individuals prepare their bodies by warming up before stepping outdoors to reduce the risk of strain on the heart. He stressed the importance of avoiding sudden exposure to cold, as this can lead to conditions like angina or heart attacks. Additionally, strenuous activities should be avoided right after transitioning from warm to cold environments.
Maha Kumbh Devotees Advised to Take Precautions
With the Maha Kumbh Mela 2025 taking place in Allahabad after 12 years, health experts are urging devotees to avoid extreme temperature fluctuations. Over 3.5 crore devotees gathered on Makar Sankranti for the first Amrit Snan in Sangam, braving the biting cold. The spiritual event is expected to draw more than 450 million people worldwide and will run until February 26. Dr. Mehta advised attendees to take precautions to protect their health, especially given the cold temperatures.
Precautionary Measures for Heart Disease Patients
The health community continues to advise that individuals, particularly those with heart conditions, take extra measures to keep their bodies warm and avoid exposure to sudden temperature shifts. By following these guidelines, patients can reduce the strain on their heart and prevent complications that may arise from extreme weather conditions.
