A new initiative in Warrington is set to bring local mental health charities together in a collaborative effort to support those affected by mental health challenges. The inaugural Warrington Wellbeing Walk will take place on Sunday, January 19, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Moore Nature Reserve.
Organized as a pilot event, the walk aims to foster open conversations and raise awareness about mental health while addressing the stigma surrounding the issue. Lee Payton, a co-coordinator from Andy’s Man Club, explained the purpose of the event:
“This is our pilot walk, designed to bring all mental health charities from the Warrington area together. The goal is to create a platform for collaboration and get people talking.”
Open to All, with a Focus on Breaking Stigma
The event is open to everyone, although participants under 16 years old must be accompanied by a responsible adult throughout. With an informal structure, the walk prioritizes creating a judgment-free environment for attendees to engage and share experiences.
The initiative highlights the stark realities of mental health issues. Organizers point out that during the approximately two hours of the event, statistics suggest that one man in the UK will take his own life. Moreover, one in five attendees is likely to have experienced a mental health challenge, and one in six may have faced suicidal thoughts.
“January is statistically one of the most challenging months for mental health and suicide ideation,” Payton added. “This walk is about breaking down barriers and encouraging open dialogue.”
Guidelines for a Safe and Respectful Space
Although informal, the walk will adhere to specific guidelines to maintain a safe and respectful environment. Discussions on sensitive topics, such as criminal matters or religion, will not be permitted to ensure inclusivity and comfort for all participants.
The organizers hope this walk will pave the way for future collaborations among local charities, ultimately creating a stronger support network for those in need.
