Doctors Warn Against Popular Carnivore Diet Amid Health Concerns

Experts Raise Alarms Over Potential Heart and Cognitive Risks. Health professionals are sounding the alarm over the rising popularity of the carnivore diet, which consists exclusively of animal products such as meat, eggs, and dairy. They warn that this dietary trend could pose significant health risks, including heart issues and dementia.

The carnivore diet has gained traction on social media, with many fitness enthusiasts advocating for its high-protein, no-vegetable approach. Proponents claim that it has led to weight loss and improved health. However, experts are expressing skepticism about the long-term benefits of such a restrictive eating plan, as reported by The New York Post.

On a recent episode of The Doctor’s Kitchen podcast, Dr. Rupy Aujla cautioned followers of the strict carnivore diet, likening it to the keto diet, which emphasizes low carbohydrate intake. He noted that both diets may be “pro-inflammatory and pro-aging,” referencing previous studies that indicated adverse changes in key organs, including the heart and kidneys. According to Dr. Aujla, the accumulation of senescent cells in these organs contributes to systemic inflammation and toxicity.

“These cells do not get cleared away by the immune system; their excess can lead to overall systemic inflammation,” Dr. Aujla explained.

Concerns about nutritional adequacy also arise from a meat-heavy, vegetable-free diet. Dr. Aujla pointed out that such a lifestyle may increase the risks of “cardio fibrosis and disregulated mitochondrial function,” along with elevated cholesterol levels. He stated, “This is something that would concern me, as people may be putting themselves at risk of cardiovascular disease and even dementia.”

While he acknowledged that a short-term version of the diet might benefit those with specific intolerances, he added, “I think this is playing with fire, considering we don’t have long-term studies on people consuming these diets.”

As the carnivore diet continues to gain popularity, the medical community urges individuals to approach it with caution, highlighting the need for more research on its long-term effects on health.
