Egypt’s Protein Bars: Popularity Grows Amid Nutritional Concerns

by Krystal

In Egypt, protein bars have surged in popularity among health and fitness enthusiasts seeking convenient snacks that curb appetite, fuel workouts, and aid muscle recovery. However, experts caution that these products often fall short of their nutritional claims.

Clinical nutritionist Rana Shams highlights that many individuals turn to protein bars due to their availability and perception as healthy snacks. They also serve as a satisfying option for those on weight-loss diets, often replacing sugary snacks.

These protein bars are widely accessible in supermarkets, gas stations, and pharmacies, adorned with vibrant packaging that prominently displays protein content. Notable brands include Zero, Boost, Lite Bite, Scrunch, Isolate, and OWN, alongside newer entrants like Breadfast’s “Byld” and Abu Auf’s offerings.

Nadeen Emad, a 29-year-old pharmacist, shared that she consumes protein bars three to four times weekly. “They’re easy to find, healthy, packed with protein, keep me feeling full, and taste great,” she said. Emad often enjoys them for breakfast, as a pre- or post-workout snack, or occasionally for dinner when she needs to meet her protein goals. She prioritizes bars with a favorable protein-to-carbohydrate ratio, aiming for over 20 grams of protein per serving.

Similarly, 34-year-old software engineer Salma Mahmoud seeks high-protein, low-calorie options, particularly favoring chocolate or coconut flavors. Both women echo Shams’ advice that not all protein bars are created equal. Shams underscores the importance of scrutinizing nutritional content, as the macronutrient profiles can vary significantly between brands. She warns that some bars contain added sugars and preservatives, which contradict their healthy branding.

A 2023 study from the University of Alexandria further complicates the protein bar landscape. Analyzing 45 samples from various products, the study revealed that many protein bars contain significantly less protein—46.4% lower—than advertised. Conversely, protein drinks tested actually exceeded their labeled protein content by 5.83%. Additionally, protein bars were found to have carbohydrate levels 231.15% higher and fat content 68.25% higher than stated on their packaging.

This mislabeling issue raises significant concerns for consumers who monitor their nutrition closely, as discrepancies can hinder dietary goals. Shams notes that this is not an isolated problem among protein bars but a widespread issue across the food industry, often going unchecked due to inadequate regulatory oversight.

In Egypt, multiple ministries govern food safety regulations, but there is no specific legislation addressing product mislabeling. A consumer protection law enacted in 2018 aims to safeguard consumer rights and prevent misleading advertising, imposing substantial fines for violations. However, the absence of mandatory testing for label accuracy remains a critical gap.

Gehan Fouad, director of the National Institute of Nutrition, emphasized that current market requirements do not include verifying label accuracy, highlighting the need for legislation to ensure food safety through reliable labeling practices.

Both Emad and Mahmoud acknowledge that while protein bars may not deliver on their nutritional promises, they often represent the best available options in supermarkets. Yet, Mahmoud cautions that no processed product can truly replace whole-food sources of nutrition, a sentiment echoed by Shams.

Shams urges consumers to prioritize unprocessed foods over convenience items like protein bars, which may not provide complete nutritional value. While protein bars can offer a temporary energy boost, she advises moderation in their consumption to maintain a healthy lifestyle. As such, consumers are encouraged to look beyond appealing packaging and consider the broader nutritional implications of their snack choices.
