Study Links Extended Desk Time to Mental Health Decline; 15-Minute Breaks Recommended

by Krystal

Recent research indicates that spending just two hours at a desk can significantly impact mental health. The ASICS Global State of Mind Study, which surveyed 26,000 participants, found a notable correlation between sedentary behavior and mental well-being, revealing that “State of Mind scores begin to drop” after only two hours of continuous work, with stress levels increasing sharply.

After four hours of uninterrupted desk work, stress levels rise by nearly 20%. However, Dr. Brendon Stubbs from King’s College London offers a solution. His study suggests that incorporating short movement breaks can vastly improve mental health. Participants who engaged in daily 5-minute breaks and 15 minutes of exercise after three to four hours of work reported a more than 22% increase in their State of Mind scores. Moreover, productivity surged by one-third, and focus improved by over 28%.

Dr. Stubbs emphasized the surprising effectiveness of these 15-minute movement breaks in enhancing well-being and reducing stress, which also positively influenced workers’ perceptions of their workplace. ASICS has launched a public service announcement featuring Brian Cox to advocate for these essential breaks in office settings.

To facilitate these breaks, employees can utilize standing desks, smartwatches with activity reminders, and fitness apps to create quick workout routines. ASICS encourages office workers worldwide to prioritize their mental health by taking regular Desk Breaks.
