From Overcoming Adversity to Powerlifting: A 66-Year-Old’s Journey of Transformation

At 58, when many begin to slow down, Marlene Flowers embarked on a fitness journey that would not only transform her body but also heal her mind and spirit. Once physically fit in her youth, Marlene faced years of self-doubt, damaged body image, and a life-altering eating disorder after enduring two toxic marriages. A serious colon surgery became a wake-up call, leading her to seek a healthier and happier life.

In 2015, Marlene began her transformation. With her son Ryan as her trainer, she embraced a ketogenic diet and at-home Beachbody workouts. Initially, her body resisted, with joint pain and muscle weakness making every move a struggle. But persistence paid off—within weeks, the aches faded, and her strength began to grow.

For four years, Marlene relied on home workouts, but at 62, Ryan encouraged her to join a gym to further challenge herself. The transition wasn’t easy; she felt out of place and intimidated. However, she soon found that the gym became her sanctuary, a place to channel past traumas into newfound strength.

Marlene’s daily routine now includes morning ab exercises and afternoon gym sessions with Ryan, where she trains seven days a week. Her regimen begins with 15 minutes on the elliptical to accommodate her existing shoulder and foot injuries, followed by targeted strength training. She focuses on different muscle groups each day, with leg day presenting both a challenge and an opportunity for growth. Today, Marlene leg presses 170 pounds and completes lat pulldowns at 110 pounds, achievements she once never thought possible.

Marlene also tackled her disordered eating, learning to properly fuel her body. With Ryan’s guidance, she transitioned from diet sodas and processed snacks to a diet rich in whole foods—eggs, oatmeal, fish, lean beef, and her beloved cauliflower. Post-workout protein shakes have been crucial for muscle recovery, and this balanced diet has left her feeling more energetic and mentally sharp.

Beyond physical strength, Marlene discovered a new source of support and community. Once feeling isolated, she found a “fit fam” online and in the gym who embraced her journey. Sharing her progress on Instagram, she quickly went viral, earning the affectionate title of “Granny Guns.” The support from strangers and recognition from bodybuilding legends like Arnold Schwarzenegger and Ronnie Coleman have given her a sense of belonging and purpose.

Now, at 66, Marlene is the oldest sponsored athlete in the country, representing brands like YoungLA, Ryse Supplements, and Village Hidden In Iron. Her achievements are a testament to her perseverance and the power of community.

Looking forward, Marlene has set her sights on earning her bodybuilding pro card. After competing in two shows last year as the oldest participant, she’s ready to tackle the challenge with intense training and a disciplined diet. Her journey is far from over; she’s just getting started.
