Ethical Use of Sick Leave and Employee Well-being at the Heart of Upcoming Public Service Workshop

by Krystal

The ethical management of sick leave and the overall health and wellness of public servants will be the central focus of a two-day workshop spearheaded by Public Service and Administration Minister, Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi. Scheduled to begin on Thursday, August 15, 2024, in KwaZulu-Natal, this event aims to address the critical challenges related to sick leave management while promoting a holistic approach to employee well-being within the public sector.

The workshop, set to conclude on Friday, August 16, 2024, will bring together key stakeholders to explore strategies that enhance the management of sick leave and ensure that both employers and employees benefit from a more integrated and supportive work environment. This initiative comes at a time when understanding the complexities of employee health and wellness is more essential than ever.

A primary objective of the workshop is to reinforce the connection between the implementation of Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) programs, Gender and Disability policies, and the management of the Policy and Procedure on Incapacity Leave and Ill-Health Retirement (PILIR). By focusing on these areas, the workshop aims to deepen the understanding of the health challenges faced by public servants and offer effective solutions.

Key discussion points at the workshop will include:

Vocational Rehabilitation and Reskilling: Exploring strategies for the rehabilitation and reskilling of employees who have faced temporary or permanent incapacitation.

Return-to-Work Programs: Highlighting the significance of structured return-to-work (RTW) programs and their positive impact on productivity, employee morale, and retention.

Reasonable Workplace Accommodations: Examining how to better support employees with disabilities or health conditions through effective implementation strategies.

Holistic Employee Well-being: Emphasizing a comprehensive approach to employee well-being as a driver of organizational productivity.

Role of Traditional Health Practitioners: Discussing how traditional health practitioners can contribute to the healthcare of public servants.

Impact of National Health Insurance: Analyzing the effects of the National Health Insurance (NHI) on healthcare services accessed by public servants.

Elimination of Harassment and Violence: Reviewing policies aimed at eradicating harassment and violence in the workplace.

The workshop will feature both physical and virtual participation from public servants and will also tap into the expertise of public service EHW practitioners, private sector Health Risk Managers, the Government Employees Medical Scheme (GEMS), and traditional healers, among others.

This event represents a significant step forward in addressing the health and wellness challenges faced by public servants, ensuring that they receive the necessary support to maintain their well-being and continue contributing effectively to the public service.
