New Jersey Family’s Instagram Brings Hope to Millions Battling Alzheimer’s

BERLIN, N.J. — An Instagram account started as a tribute to her mother, who is now in the late stages of Alzheimer’s disease, has quickly become a source of support for millions of people sharing their struggles and uplifting each other.

Genevieve Haldeman of Berlin, New Jersey, started the Instagram account to honor her mother, Phyllis, who has been battling Alzheimer’s disease. Phyllis was known for her vibrant personality. “Phyllis is fun. Phyllis loves to dance. She loves her family,” Haldeman said. “She’s just all around a great, great person.”

The decline began slowly, becoming noticeable one Christmas morning six years ago. “She couldn’t remember how to make breakfast,” Haldeman recalled. “So, I think that’s when we knew.”

In response to her mother’s condition, Haldeman decided to share their journey on Instagram. Her goal was to focus on living life to the fullest despite the illness. “I didn’t want it to be so focused on this progressive disease, this illness,” she explained. “I wanted it to be like, just living.”

The account features many happy moments, including lots of dancing, which has resonated with a broad audience. “We definitely connected with so many people who are going through this journey with their loved ones more than I ever imagined when this started,” Haldeman said.

The Instagram page, @phyllisann922, has amassed almost 5 million views. Haldeman has been overwhelmed by messages of support from the community. “It just completely snowballed to such a community of just love and kindness,” she said. “I can’t tell you how many people have reached out. The support is absolutely amazing. To know what you’re doing is helping other people. It just makes you want to do even more because you don’t feel so alone.”

Haldeman describes the experience as healing. “It’s like healing,” she said. “To go through something like this but to not focus on the sadness and find bright in the darkness.” The support and shared experiences on Instagram have helped her and many others find comfort and hope.

The Haldeman family works together to stay positive while caring for Phyllis at home. They emphasize the importance of having a supportive team. “Having a team is really important,” they say, underscoring the collective effort required to provide the best care for Phyllis.

Through their journey, the Haldeman family has shown how sharing their story and connecting with others can bring light to even the darkest of times. Their Instagram account continues to be a beacon of hope and solidarity for millions facing similar challenges.
