Marcus Stewart, a former professional footballer diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND), has successfully rallied support for the Darby Rimmer MND Foundation by organizing a fundraising walk in Bristol. Joined by 300 participants, Stewart led the group on an 18-mile journey around Bristol’s sports arenas, starting and finishing at Bristol Rovers’ home ground.
The 51-year-old, diagnosed with MND in September 2022, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming response to the event, describing it as “humbling” and beyond expectations. MND, a degenerative condition affecting nerves in the brain and spinal cord, currently has no cure. Funds raised from Stewart’s Sports Tour will contribute to medical research, awareness initiatives, and support networks facilitated by the Foundation.
Stewart, who scored 254 career goals over 20 years, reflected on the success of the walk, highlighting the community spirit and support shown by participants from across the country, including Ipswich and Leeds. He emphasized the personal significance of using his profile to advocate for MND research and support, recognizing the limited platforms available to others affected by the disease.
“I don’t do it for my own personal promotion,” Stewart affirmed, “I do it because I think it would make a difference, and I’ll keep doing that until I can’t anymore.” Despite the progressive impact of MND on his arms and hands, Stewart remains committed to raising awareness and funds, hopeful for advancements leading to a cure in his lifetime.
The walk not only symbolized solidarity in the face of MND but also provided Stewart with cherished moments of reconnecting with family, friends, and former teammates, reinforcing his resolve to continue the fight against this debilitating disease.
