Man with MND Conquers Seven Peaks in Rob Burrow Tribute

Ian Flatt, a 58-year-old from North Yorkshire battling motor neurone disease (MND), has accomplished a remarkable feat by scaling seven peaks across England, Scotland, and Wales over three weeks. His challenge, dedicated to the late rugby league star Rob Burrow, concluded on Sunday at Roseberry Topping in North Yorkshire.

Despite relying on a wheelchair, Mr. Flatt was aided by a group of up to 70 friends and family members who supported him throughout the journey. Starting from Whernside on June 15, he ascended peaks including Snowdon, Pen-y-Fan, and Skiddaw, facing challenging weather conditions but drawing strength from Burrow’s legacy and the MND community.

The culmination of the challenge on July 7, coinciding with Burrow’s funeral, held particular significance for Mr. Flatt and his team. Reflecting on the journey, he remarked, “When we set about planning this challenge last August, the first parameter that we had was that we had to finish on 7 July – Rob Burrow Day.” The challenge, originally conceived to include Burrow, took on greater importance following his passing, motivating the team to honor his memory.

Describing the experience as both grueling and immensely rewarding, Mr. Flatt expressed gratitude for the support and inspiration he received. “There were times I wondered if we would get through it,” he admitted, highlighting the physical toll of the climbs while emphasizing the joy of pursuing a passion alongside cherished companions.

Mr. Flatt, who requires ventilator assistance for much of the day due to his condition, was diagnosed with MND in 2019, a few months before Burrow, his fellow MND advocate. Inspired by Burrow’s legacy and his iconic number seven jersey for Leeds Rhinos, Mr. Flatt’s fundraising efforts during the challenge have exceeded £22,000 for the Leeds Hospitals Charity Rob Burrow Centre for MND Appeal.

Rob Burrow, renowned for his illustrious rugby career, passed away on June 2 at the age of 41, leaving a lasting impact on the sports community and beyond. His recent funeral, attended by thousands, underscored the profound respect and admiration he garnered during his life.

Mr. Flatt’s enduring tribute to Rob Burrow not only celebrates resilience in the face of adversity but also raises crucial awareness and support for those affected by MND.
