Sun Callus Trend: Soccer Star Sparks Skin Cancer Concern

by Krystal

Marcos Llorente, a prominent soccer player, recently ignited controversy by dismissing concerns about sun exposure and its link to skin cancer, instead promoting the risky trend of developing a “sun callus.” This practice encourages prolonged sun exposure without sunscreen to toughen the skin against burns, a notion strongly condemned by dermatologists.

Dr. José Aguilera, from the Spanish Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, emphasizes that such practices significantly increase the risk of skin cancer. He underscores that skin cancer, notably melanoma, remains a prevalent threat exacerbated by unprotected sun exposure. Despite widespread awareness campaigns, the incidence of skin cancers continues to rise.

The Spanish Association against Cancer reports alarming statistics: in 2023 alone, Spain recorded 20,392 new cases of skin cancer, with non-melanoma carcinomas being the most common. Experts attribute this surge partly to misconceptions about safe sun practices.

Dr. Andrea Combalia from the Societat Catalana de Dermatologia warns against the cumulative effects of sun damage, noting that sun exposure without protection leads to DNA damage and increases the risk of various skin cancers. She compares the denial of sun damage to previous skepticism towards COVID-19, stressing the importance of sun protection even among younger demographics.

While acknowledging the benefits of sunlight for vitamin D synthesis, experts caution that UV rays responsible for vitamin D production also heighten the risk of skin tumors. Recommendations emphasize the judicious use of sunscreen, protective clothing, and minimizing exposure during peak hours (11 am to 4 pm).

In combating health misinformation, particularly about sun exposure, experts advocate for responsible reporting and public education. They stress that while vitamin D is crucial, safer alternatives like dietary sources and supplements should be considered to mitigate risks associated with excessive sun exposure.

As debates on sun safety continue, the medical community underscores the critical need for informed, evidence-based practices to safeguard public health amidst evolving health challenges.
