Expert Tips for Maintaining Gym Hygiene and Health

by Krystal

Maintaining proper hygiene at the gym is crucial for preventing illnesses and ensuring a safe environment for all patrons, whether you’re a novice or a seasoned lifter. Melanie McNeal, physical and occupational therapy manager at Baylor College of Medicine, emphasizes the importance of cleanliness in gym spaces.

“Good hygiene not only prevents illnesses like colds, influenza, and salmonella, but it also reflects the overall maintenance and quality of gym equipment,” McNeal explained. “Failure to adhere to hygiene rules can lead to sickness, transmission of illnesses to others, or even cancellation of gym memberships.”

When assessing gym hygiene, McNeal suggests looking out for key indicators:

Availability of Sanitary Wipes: Lack of readily available wipes for members and staff to clean equipment suggests potential bacterial buildup.

Signs and Cleaning Schedule: Absence of posted signs or a visible cleaning schedule may indicate a lack of emphasis on cleanliness.

Member Behavior: Observing whether gym-goers consistently clean equipment after use reveals the gym’s culture of hygiene.

Equipment Condition: Dust accumulation and prolonged out-of-service equipment can signify neglect in cleaning and maintenance.

Broken Machines: A high number of malfunctioning machines may indicate inadequate management attention to gym upkeep.

To contribute to a clean gym environment, McNeal advises:

Clean Attire: Always wear clean clothes to prevent the spread of bacteria and unpleasant odors.

Visual Inspection: Before using equipment, visually inspect for cleanliness and wait for any chemical cleaning residue to dry completely.

Post-Exercise Cleaning: Use provided wipes or a napkin sprayed with cleaning solution to wipe down areas of equipment touched by skin or sweat.

Foot Hygiene: If using communal showers, wear flip flops to protect against fungal and bacterial infections.

“Expect cleanliness at your gym and communicate any concerns to management promptly,” McNeal recommended. “Ask about the cleaning schedule and practice cleaning up after yourself to maintain a respectful environment for all gym users.”
