Study Shows Rising Mental Health Issues in Young Britons Impacting Employment Prospects

by Krystal

A recent study by the Resolution Foundation think-tank highlights a concerning trend of increasing mental health problems among young Britons, negatively affecting their job search and employment outcomes. The research, spanning three years and focusing on mental health and work for individuals aged 18 to 24, identifies social media as a significant factor contributing to these challenges.

According to the study, young individuals grappling with mental health issues face higher rates of unemployment or tend to secure low-paying jobs compared to their peers without such concerns. The report notes that this age group has the poorest mental health among all demographics, emphasizing the urgent need for government intervention.

As the UK emerged from pandemic-related lockdowns between 2021 and 2022, the study reveals that 34% of young Britons reported symptoms of mental disorders such as anxiety, bipolar disorder, or depression. This represents an increase from 24% in the year 2000. Moreover, 41% of young women were found to be prone to mental health disorders, compared to 26% of young men.

The Resolution Foundation emphasizes the role of excessive social media use in contributing to anxiety, depression, and online bullying among young people. The report underlines the far-reaching consequences of poor mental health on various aspects of young individuals’ lives, including education, employment prospects, and overall well-being. The think-tank calls for increased funding for mental health support to prevent the emergence of a “lost generation” grappling with mental health challenges and facing long-term impacts on their life chances.
