Focus on Mental Health Emerges as Key National Priority Amid Calls for Reserve Management Adjustments by Opposition MPs

The debate on mental health in Singapore continued into a second day, with Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong emphasizing its significance as a national priority. This discussion followed a motion addressing the utilization of Singapore’s past reserves, which sparked close to seven hours of debate among Members of Parliament (MPs).

DPM Wong underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing mental health services, outlining plans to bolster resources and support networks. Among the proposed initiatives is a substantial increase in the number of public-sector psychiatrists and psychologists by 2030. Additionally, mental health services will be extended to all polyclinics and an additional 900 general practitioner clinics, with the aim of reaching more individuals in need.

The significance of addressing mental health issues was reiterated by 26 MPs who expressed concerns regarding various challenges such as long waiting times and limited awareness of mental health conditions, particularly among youth and the elderly.

In a separate matter, taxi drivers facing downtime for the installation of new onboard units (OBUs) for the upcoming Electronic Road Pricing (ERP) system will receive rental rebates to offset their financial losses. Senior Minister of State for Transport Amy Khor assured that taxi operators have agreed to compensate drivers during the installation process. The transition to the new ERP system, known as ERP 2.0, will affect nearly one million vehicles, with taxis being among the first scheduled for installation.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong emphasized the importance of responsible management of Singapore’s reserves, cautioning against undue pressure to dip into them except in cases of exceptional need or crises. PM Lee’s remarks came amid a motion raised by Progress Singapore Party (PSP) Non-Constituency MP Leong Mun Wai, questioning the government’s reserve accumulation policies. The debate on reserve management underscores differing perspectives between political parties, with the ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) defending its current approach.

In other parliamentary discussions, Senior Minister of State for National Development Sim Ann clarified that while the Housing Board regulates rent for its coffee shops, stall rentals for privately owned coffee shops operate under market principles. Additionally, Senior Minister of State for Sustainability and the Environment Koh Poh Koon addressed the issue of standardizing food expiry date labels, highlighting potential challenges and costs for food manufacturers.
