Navigating Holiday Stress: Mental Health Experts Offer Guidance

by Krystal

As Christmas approaches, the hustle and bustle of last-minute shopping and preparations bring increased stress and anxiety, impacting mental health for many individuals.

According to Holly Whyte of YEG Psychology, 77% of people report holiday stress, with over half identifying Christmas as the most stressful holiday. Edmonton therapists note a surge in anxiety and depression during this time, compounded by the daily challenges people face.

Luke Suelzle, a therapist with Insight Psychological, highlights various stressors, including the overwhelming combination of work and holiday preparations, crowded supermarkets, and challenges in family dynamics or feelings of loneliness. This year, financial pressures are heightened due to inflation and rising prices, leading to guilt and stress related to holiday spending.

“Making a budget and sticking to it is extremely important at this time of year. Know what fits within your means and not somebody else’s, because everybody has different means and budgets,” advises Whyte.

Psychologists emphasize that holiday experiences can trigger PTSD, particularly for those dealing with grief or spending their first Christmas without a loved one. First responders or those working during the holidays may also face unique challenges.

Suelzle warns against overextending oneself during the Christmas season and suggests maintaining daily routines to avoid added stress. Taking breaks, whether short or an entire evening, and practicing techniques like deep breathing or mindfulness can help manage stress.

Despite societal pressure to be in the holiday spirit, psychologists emphasize that it’s okay not to feel constantly happy during Christmas. Suelzle encourages individuals to prioritize their needs, take time for themselves, and learn to say no when necessary.

As the holiday season unfolds, mental health experts advocate for self-care and mindfulness, recognizing that each person’s experience is unique, and it’s essential to prioritize well-being amid the festivities.
