TOLEDO, Ohio (WTVG) – While the winter season may usher in colder temperatures, experts emphasize the importance of spending time outdoors for mental well-being, regardless of the weather. Lindsey Payne, a Licensed Professional Counselor with The Willow Center, highlights the positive impact of natural light exposure during the colder months.

As the region experiences a sunny November and December in 2023, Payne underscores that even when the sun isn’t visible, being outside in the natural light contributes to mental health. Comparing the human body to a rechargeable battery, Payne emphasizes the necessity of outdoor time for recharging, irrespective of sun visibility.

To maximize the benefits, Payne recommends spending between 15 to 30 minutes outdoors each day, emphasizing that simply sitting indoors with open curtains doesn’t suffice. Whether taking a walk or sitting on the porch, bundling up in cold weather is encouraged to combat vitamin D deficiency and maintain serotonin levels.

Morning outdoor exposure is particularly beneficial, coinciding with melatonin production upon waking. Payne suggests incorporating a cup of coffee to enhance warmth during morning outdoor activities.

Amidst the holiday season, where anxiety and depression may surface, the crisp winter air serves as a solution. Payne likens it to “cold hydro-therapy,” explaining that the cold wind hitting the face provides a refreshing experience and mental clarity.

While acknowledging the tendency to be more indoors during the winter, Payne encourages individuals to appreciate the moments spent outside. Rather than merely checking outdoor time off the to-do list, she advocates for being fully present and embracing the mental health benefits that the winter chill can offer.
