Ava Phillippe’s Exclusive Beauty Look for Chanel Event

by Holly

Despite sweltering temperatures in New York City, Instagram’s trendiest figures congregated at a Williamsburg diner, decked out in black and vibrant tweed, to celebrate the launch of Chanel’s Lucky Chance Diner—a stunning fragrance activation featuring burgers, fries, double-C ice cream cones, and retro jukeboxes.

Ava Philippe, the 23-year-old daughter of Reese Witherspoon and Ryan Phillippe and one of the Instagram-cool crowd, allowed Harper’s Bazaar to join her as she prepared for the event with makeup artist Quinn Murphy and hairstylist Jennifer Yepez. Ava explained, “As a creative person, I’ve always loved the art of makeup, and I often treat doing my makeup like painting. I really enjoy learning new techniques and exploring trends, and I’ve been fortunate to receive so many great tips and tricks from all the amazing makeup artists I’ve gotten to work with over the years.”

Below, you can get an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at how Ava and her team achieved a picture-perfect and heat-resistant beauty look, along with a list of all the products they used.

“Working with Ava was incredible. She has an amazing face to do makeup on,” Murphy said. “She likes makeup and likes to play with looks. I loved her Chanel minidress, and we created the makeup based on the look. Ava’s outfit looked like it was straight out of a ’90s runway.”

“We agreed on a ’90s ‘Supers’ makeup with a powerful red lip to add glamour and color. The plan was to do a sculpted face using browns, beiges, and taupes and then finish with a strong yet fun red lip,” Murphy explained.

“I absolutely adore the Chanel Rouge Coco lipsticks, as they are the perfect consistency and have great color payoff,” Ava shared with Bazaar. “Plus, few things make me feel as effortlessly elegant as having a nice lipstick in my bag!”

“I’m a big fan of a classic red lip, and I think the lip color I wore tonight, Gabrielle, was the perfect pop of color,” Ava said.

“I made sure to set the makeup with Chanel Poudre Universelle Libre Natural Finish Loose Powder using a brush and then again with the Chanel powder puff in the T-zone. It’s 95 degrees today!” Murphy noted. “The puff really works the powder into the skin for more mattifying. I also gave her Chanel Blotting Papers to put in her bag; they are great to control shine.”

“The hero product would have to be split between Chanel Les 4 Ombres Byzance in Parure Vénitienne and the red lip color, Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Gabrielle,” Murphy said. “The eye shadows melted onto the skin, and the colors were really easy to blend and use together. I loved the soft eye, yet it added so much definition. Her eyes looked so blue!”

“The one element I can be a bit particular about is my eyeliner (the perfect wing is everything!), so I sometimes ask the artists I work with if I can do that myself,” Ava mentioned. “Otherwise, it’s super fun to watch the pros do what they do best and create awesome looks.”

“For the hair, I applied L’Oréal Paris EverPure Bond Repair Collection just from the midshaft to ends, as well as L’Oréal Paris EverPure 21-in-1 Color Caring Spray. Then I applied L’Oréal Volume Extra Envy mousse all over on Ava’s damp hair and rough-dried it to keep the volume and texture,” said Yepez. “Using a small round brush, I blow-dried her bangs into place. I then took about one-inch sections, using a one-inch curling iron, and wrapped the hair around, leaving just the ends out.”

“To finish the hair look, I sprayed L’Oréal Paris Elnett hairspray on her curtain bangs to keep them in place and then just around her face,” Yepez said. “I think this look is perfect even if it is one of the hottest days in New York. It’s a bit effortless, and with the products I used, I know that the style will stay all night long, even in this heat.”

“To get easy effortless waves, I made sure that each section was curled in different directions,” Yepez added. “After I took a wide-tooth comb and brushed out the waves—that way, they still stayed shiny and added a little bit of fluffiness to the style.”

“The Chanel Rouge Coco Ultra Hydrating Lip Colour in Gabrielle is a showstopper!” Murphy concluded regarding the finished look. “It’s a great balanced and vibrant red that is sophisticated and fun at the same time. This is a makeup look that anyone can wear and will look great. Classic and cool.”
