In a move to address the rising mental health challenges facing young people in Rotorua, the New Zealand Government has announced increased funding for youth mental health and addiction services. Mental Health Minister Matt Doocey confirmed that the government will allocate resources from the Mental Health Innovation Fund to help the Rotorua Community Youth Centre Trust extend support to an additional 560 young individuals.
The initiative is part of the Government’s broader strategy to prioritize early intervention and community-based support to mitigate mental health issues among youth. Minister Doocey emphasized the importance of grassroots initiatives in delivering effective mental health and addiction services.
“This fund is part of the Government’s commitment to investing in grassroots initiatives that deliver mental health and addiction support through community organizations,” Minister Doocey said in a statement.
Strengthening Local Support and Training
In addition to expanding direct mental health services, the funding will also be used to deliver a variety of courses and workshops aimed at upskilling community members. These programs are designed to equip individuals with the necessary tools and knowledge to provide better support for young people dealing with mental health challenges.
“I’m pleased that this new funding will enable the Rotorua Community Youth Centre Trust to expand its team and enhance the important work they do in supporting young people and helping them realize their full potential,” Doocey added.
The Rotorua Community Youth Centre Trust, which has been providing free primary health, mental health, and social services to youth in the region, will use the new funding to ensure young people have access to support in a safe and inclusive environment.
A Key Part of a National Strategy
The funding is part of the wider $10 million Mental Health Innovation Fund, which aims to support non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and community providers in scaling up their efforts to improve mental health and addiction outcomes across New Zealand. The Rotorua Community Youth Centre Trust is the sixth recipient of the funding in the first round, joining other notable organizations such as Youthline, the Sir John Kirwan Foundation, MATES in Construction, the Mental Health Foundation, and Wellington City Mission. Additional recipients will be announced in the coming weeks.
Further Funding Opportunities Expected
Minister Doocey also confirmed that the next round of funding from the Mental Health Innovation Fund will open mid-year, offering more opportunities for organizations to apply for financial support to enhance mental health services in their communities.
By investing in local mental health initiatives and increasing access to services, the Government aims to create a more resilient and supportive environment for young people across Rotorua and New Zealand.
