Medical experts are raising concerns over a growing number of cases involving hemorrhoids and anal fistulas, which are increasingly being linked to prolonged phone use on the toilet. These health issues are reportedly on the rise due to extended periods of sitting on the toilet, a practice often accompanied by mobile phone use.
Dr. Jignesh Gandhi, a senior robotic and laparoscopic surgeon at Gleneagles Hospital in Mumbai, drew attention to the issue during the 74th Foundation Day celebrations at ESIC Hospital in Okhla, emphasizing how lifestyle habits, especially the excessive use of mobile phones in restrooms, contribute to these conditions.
At ESIC Hospital, over 500 cases of hemorrhoids and anal fistulas were reported in just one year, according to Dr. Ravi Ranjan, a surgical specialist at the institution. He attributed these cases to poor lifestyle choices, including inadequate water intake, poor diet, and the prolonged time spent sitting on the toilet using mobile devices.
Dr. Birbal from Marengo Asia Hospital further explained that chronic constipation, resulting from poor dietary habits and excessive time spent sitting on the toilet, creates a cycle of painful inflammation. This can lead to hemorrhoids and even more severe conditions like anal fistulas.
Health professionals recommend several preventive measures to combat these issues. They advise individuals to adopt a fiber-rich diet, avoid excessive toilet time, and ensure proper hydration. Early intervention is particularly critical, as untreated cases may lead to complications that require surgical intervention.
To address the growing demand for treatment, experts are calling for innovative approaches, including the adoption of radiofrequency ablation (Rafaelo), a procedure that uses local anesthesia to treat hemorrhoids. This U.S. FDA-approved method offers several benefits over traditional treatments, such as reduced waiting times, same-day discharge, and quicker recovery, making it especially effective for Grade 2 and 3 hemorrhoids.
According to Dr. Vani Vijay, the use of radiofrequency treatment results in better patient outcomes and more efficient treatment. It allows hospitals to treat more patients and reduce surgery backlogs, which can help alleviate the pressure on India’s healthcare system.
By adopting these innovative treatment options, healthcare providers aim to improve patient care and ensure timely relief for those suffering from painful conditions like hemorrhoids and anal fistulas. As these methods gain wider use, medical professionals are hopeful they can significantly enhance patient outcomes while helping to meet the growing demand for care.
