Actress Song Hye-kyo recently opened up about her evolving approach to beauty and acting in an interview held at a café in Sogyeok-dong, Seoul. The star of the upcoming film Dark Nuns reflected on her career and personal growth, emphasizing her shift away from focusing on physical appearance in favor of honing her craft.
In response to questions about her recent roles, Song Hye-kyo admitted to paying less attention to her looks, especially in her portrayal of characters in projects such as The Glory. “It’s been quite a while since I let go of focusing on my looks. This was also true for The Glory. On set, there wasn’t even a reflector. While the staff took care to match the tone of the film, the simplicity suited the role,” she explained.
The actress, now in her 40s, shared her perspective on beauty, acknowledging that while she still strives to look her best in certain settings, her focus has shifted. “Of course, when it comes to events or commercials, I put in a lot of effort to look good. I want to look pretty. But now that I’m in my 40s, I feel like I’m past the age where I can rely on my looks in projects. I tell myself, ‘I have to focus on acting now,’” Song said.
As for the feedback she most desires from her audience, the actress made it clear that acting remains her primary concern. “Hearing that my acting was good is the ultimate compliment for an actor. More than being called pretty, I’d love to hear people say my acting was amazing. That would be the best,” she shared.
Song also addressed the popular term “TaeHyeJi,” a nickname for herself, Kim Tae-hee, and Jun Ji-hyun—three actresses celebrated for both their beauty and acting talent since the early 2000s. With a smile, she joked, “Who came up with that?” Reflecting on her younger years, she expressed gratitude for the continued recognition. “When I was younger, I liked it. They’re all actresses I admire too. I’m grateful that people still refer to us like that. But I think it’s time for new nicknames for the younger generation of actors,” Song said, showcasing a humble and endearing response.
In her latest project, Dark Nuns, Song portrays Sister Junia, a character caught in a dark and intense narrative. The film, directed by Kwon Hyeok-jae, follows a group of individuals who perform a forbidden ritual to save a boy possessed by an evil spirit. Song’s passionate performance is already drawing anticipation ahead of its release.
As Song Hye-kyo continues to evolve as an actress, her focus on the depth of her roles and her desire for recognition based on her acting skills rather than her looks signals a new phase in her celebrated career.
