In less than a year since its inception, ZHL Studios has rapidly expanded across Essex, offering young people a unique approach to performing arts education that prioritizes mental health and confidence-building.
Founded in February 2024 by Zoe Harrison, a Leigh resident with a passion for the arts, ZHL Studios aims to provide an environment where children can explore their talents without the stress typically associated with performance arts training. The studio, which began with a single location, now operates in seven towns across Essex, including Leigh, Benfleet, Hockley, Brentwood, Billericay, Chelmsford, and Romford.
ZHL Studios offers a variety of performing arts classes, ranging from musical theatre to cheerleading, with an emphasis on improving the mental well-being of its students. Harrison explains that the core mission of her business is to create a supportive space where children can develop their skills while boosting their self-esteem.
“We’re not just about performing arts; we’re about improving mental health in children and building their confidence,” Harrison said. “I want to offer an environment where they can enjoy themselves while receiving top-notch training.”
Harrison’s approach is shaped by her own experience training at some of the UK’s leading drama schools. She highlights her background as a driving force in her vision to create a performing arts school free from the pressure often found in competitive environments.
“My inspiration for ZHL Studios came from my own journey,” Harrison said. “I trained in London at some of the best institutions, and I wanted to start something that focused on enjoyment and personal growth, without the stress.”
The positive impact on children’s mental health is central to the studio’s ethos, and Harrison emphasizes the importance of providing a nurturing environment where students can thrive.
“Children’s mental health is so important, and anything we can do to help improve it is a bonus,” she added.
ZHL Studios’ approach has clearly resonated with families in the local community. According to Harrison, the growth of the business can be largely attributed to word-of-mouth recommendations from parents and carers who appreciate the focus on well-being and enjoyment.
“The support and interest have been overwhelming,” Harrison said. “We’re now considering hiring more staff to keep up with demand.”
While the rapid success of the business has surprised Harrison, she remains committed to her long-term vision. “It was always my intention to expand beyond Leigh and grow the business across Essex,” she explained.
At its core, ZHL Studios is dedicated to equipping children with the confidence they need to tackle challenges both in and out of the studio. Through its unique focus on mental health and personal growth, the studio is quickly becoming a staple in the Essex community, offering a refreshing alternative to traditional performing arts education.
