Paula Berryman’s journey with breast cancer began in October 2020, but her experience goes beyond the physical challenges of the disease. Describing her cancer journey as “90% emotional and spiritual and 10% physical,” Berryman’s story highlights the often-overlooked mental health aspects of cancer treatment.
In the latest episode of Getting Health Care Right, Berryman, a TriHealth patient, shared her experience alongside Stacey Reese, clinical manager of TriHealth’s Psychosocial Oncology Program. They discussed the importance of mental health support during cancer treatment, emphasizing the free behavioral health services available to TriHealth cancer patients.
“I’m just so blessed to be here at TriHealth and to have this service,” Berryman said. “I was 52, had never talked to a therapist, never talked to a social worker. I thought I was pretty upbeat, had faith, and could handle this. The reality was, I could not.”
TriHealth’s Psychosocial Oncology Program is designed to provide emotional and psychological support to cancer patients, recognizing the significant toll that cancer treatment can take on mental well-being. The program offers a range of services, including counseling and social work, to help patients cope with the emotional challenges of their diagnosis and treatment.
Berryman’s own experience underscores the critical role of mental health care in cancer treatment. Initially, she believed that faith and a positive outlook would be enough to help her navigate the ordeal. However, she soon realized the need for professional support.
“Taking care of your mental health during cancer treatment is just as important as taking care of your physical health,” said Reese. “Our program is designed to help patients address the emotional and psychological hurdles that often accompany cancer diagnosis and treatment.”
Throughout the episode, Berryman shares insights into her cancer journey—from her initial diagnosis to the formulation of her treatment plan—and discusses how TriHealth’s Psychosocial Oncology Program became an essential part of her care. She also offers advice for others facing a cancer diagnosis, stressing the importance of seeking help and support.
The Psychosocial Oncology Program is a key component of TriHealth’s holistic approach to cancer care. By integrating mental health services into cancer treatment, TriHealth aims to ensure that patients not only survive but thrive emotionally and spiritually throughout their journey.
