According to the National Institutes of Health, the recommended daily intake of magnesium is 310 to 320 milligrams for women and 400 to 420 milligrams for men. Fortunately, meeting your magnesium needs can be easily achieved through a balanced diet. Here are ten magnesium-rich foods to consider adding to your meals.

1. Spinach

Leafy greens, particularly spinach, are rich in magnesium, offering about 156 mg per cup when boiled. Spinach is also a great source of iron, fiber, and vitamins A and C. Valerie Agyeman, RDN, suggests incorporating spinach into a whole wheat wrap filled with chicken or tofu and black beans for a hearty meal packed with magnesium.

2. Almonds, Cashews, and Peanuts

These nutrient-dense nuts are significant sources of magnesium. One ounce of almonds contains 80 mg, while cashews provide 74 mg. Cassetty recommends enjoying cashew butter, which has 83 mg per two tablespoons, spread on banana slices for a magnesium-rich snack. Peanut butter is another option, delivering 49 mg per two tablespoons. When choosing nut butters, opt for those without added oils or sugars.

3. Chia, Flax, and Pumpkin Seeds

Seeds, especially pumpkin seeds, are excellent sources of magnesium. An ounce of pumpkin seeds contains 156 mg, accounting for 37% of the daily value. These seeds also provide protein and iron, making them a nutritious addition to salads or overnight oats.

4. Oats

Half a cup of dried whole grain oats delivers over 13% of your daily magnesium requirement. Enhance your oatmeal with toppings like bananas and flax seeds to boost its nutritional value further.

5. Dark Chocolate

This indulgent treat is surprisingly nutritious, containing 65 mg of magnesium in a one-ounce serving. Cassetty advises selecting dark chocolate with 70-85% cocoa for maximum health benefits, making it a perfect after-dinner snack.

6. Black Beans

One cup of canned black beans provides 84 mg of magnesium, along with 17 grams of fiber and 15 grams of protein. Cassetty enjoys preparing a taco salad featuring black beans and avocado over a bed of fresh spinach.

7. Edamame

Also known as soybeans, edamame is a superfood rich in protein, calcium, dietary fiber, and magnesium, offering 50 mg per half cup. Agyeman recommends steaming edamame for a simple and delicious snack.

8. Quinoa

Cooked quinoa contains 118 mg of magnesium per cup. Often categorized as a whole grain, quinoa is higher in protein than many other grains. Cassetty suggests using quinoa as a rice substitute in stir-fries or bowls alongside black beans and spinach for a nutrient-packed meal.

9. Avocado

A whole avocado offers 58 mg of magnesium and is also high in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats. Combine it with whole wheat bread for a nutritious avocado toast, effectively doubling your magnesium intake.

10. Yogurt

Plain low-fat yogurt is another great source of magnesium, providing 42 mg per serving. In addition to magnesium, it is rich in calcium, protein, and probiotics. Agyeman enjoys making a frozen yogurt bark with dark chocolate, cashews, and pumpkin seeds for a healthy treat.
