As autumn arrives, cravings for comfort foods can lead to digestive issues. Nutritional therapist Kerry Beeson emphasizes that fiber is the “unsung hero” during this season, crucial for boosting immunity and maintaining digestive health. She notes that as temperatures drop, people often consume heavier meals that can cause bloating and constipation.
Beeson recommends increasing fiber intake to support digestion and nourish gut bacteria, which can help prevent energy slumps. Foods rich in fiber, such as root vegetables, squashes, and legumes, are in season and ideal for hearty soups and stews.
Current guidelines suggest that adults should consume 30-35g of fiber daily, yet many only reach about 18g. To enhance fiber intake, Beeson suggests swapping white grains for whole grains, keeping vegetable skins on, adding wheat bran to breakfast, and sprinkling nuts or seeds on meals. She also advises aiming for seven portions of fruits and vegetables each day to maximize health benefits.
