New Covid XEC Strain: What You Need to Know About Symptoms and Vaccination

by Krystal

A new Covid-19 strain, dubbed XEC, is spreading rapidly across the UK, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA). This variant, a hybrid of the KS.1.1 and KP.3.3 strains, has led to a noticeable rise in hospital admissions, with the rate increasing to 4.5 per 100,000 people in the week leading up to October 6, compared to 3.7 the week before.

The XEC strain is believed to be more transmissible due to its numerous mutations. It presents symptoms similar to those seen in other Covid variants, including fatigue, headaches, sore throats, and high fevers.

While self-isolation is no longer a legal requirement in the UK, the NHS advises those who test positive for Covid to stay away from others for at least five days. To protect vulnerable individuals, a 10-day avoidance period is recommended. Additionally, it’s generally advised to wait until symptoms subside before resuming daily activities.

Key Symptoms of Covid XEC

The XEC strain produces symptoms resembling those of cold or flu, including:

  • High temperature
  • Body aches
  • Fatigue
  • Cough or sore throat

Vaccination Information

In response to the rising cases, the NHS has launched an autumn booster campaign for those most at risk. Eligible groups include:

  • Individuals aged 65 and older
  • People between six months and 64 years with underlying health
    conditions, including pregnant women
  • Residents in care homes for older adults
  • Frontline NHS and social care workers

Those who qualify can book appointments through the NHS app, via their GP, pharmacies, or by calling 119.

As Covid continues to evolve, staying informed and taking necessary precautions remains essential.
