Dr. Swapnil Raman-Luhadiya, a family medicine physician at Well by Kaiser Permanente, emphasizes the importance of assessing medical conditions when contemplating retirement. Factors such as high blood pressure, chronic pain, diabetes, fatigue, and limited mobility should be taken into account before making a decision.

Emotional health is equally critical in this regard. Dr. Raman-Luhadiya advises individuals to reflect on their emotional well-being and consider how work-related stress impacts them. Feelings of anxiety or negativity triggered by work could be a sign that it might be time to step back from the workforce.

Statistics from the Center for Retirement Research at Boston College reveal that the average retirement age is around 64.7 for men and 62 for women. However, there is a growing trend of people continuing to work beyond traditional retirement ages. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projected that a significant percentage of people aged 65 to 74 would still be working in the coming years, compared to previous decades.

Interestingly, research has shown that working beyond retirement age can bring health benefits, including enhanced mental stimulation, increased social engagement, and a reduced risk of cancer, heart disease, and dementia. A study published in a Centers for Disease Control and Prevention journal discovered that older adults who worked past age 65 reported being in better health and experienced fewer serious health issues.

Dr. Raman-Luhadiya also highlights the importance of considering access to healthcare when retiring. Individuals should assess whether their retirement plans provide sufficient health coverage and allow them to continue seeing their physicians and specialists. Access to high-quality healthcare is essential for maintaining a long and healthy life in retirement.
