Expert Guidance on Vitamins to Avoid During Pregnancy

by Krystal

Bangalore, India – Ensuring a healthy pregnancy is a top priority for expectant mothers, and while vitamins and minerals are crucial for fetal development, excessive intake can be detrimental. To navigate the complexities of prenatal nutrition, we consulted Dr. Karthigaiselvi, Head of the Department of Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics at Gleneagles BGS Hospitals in Kengeri, Bangalore.

Dr. Karthigaiselvi emphasizes that a balanced diet complemented by prescribed prenatal vitamins is essential for healthy fetal growth. “Vitamin overdose can occur when an individual exceeds the recommended daily amount,” she warns, noting that any excess can be toxic. Consulting with a healthcare provider before taking additional supplements is vital to avoid potential overdoses.

Vitamins are categorized into fat-soluble and water-soluble types. Fat-soluble vitamins, stored in the liver and fatty tissues, can accumulate to toxic levels, posing risks to both mother and child. In contrast, while water-soluble vitamins are excreted through urine, excessive intake can still irritate the digestive system.

Folic acid is particularly critical, as it helps prevent neural tube defects during the first trimester. The National Health Service (NHS) recommends that women take folic acid daily before conception and up to 12 weeks into pregnancy. For those at higher risk of neural tube defects, a higher dose may be advised.

Dr. Karthigaiselvi cautions against high doses of certain vitamins. “Establishing a well-balanced diet and monitoring vitamin intake is crucial,” she states. Expecting mothers should familiarize themselves with terms like Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) and tolerable upper intake levels. Notably, while a nutrient-rich diet mitigates risks, caution is advised with synthetic supplements, especially those containing concentrated doses.

“Taking excessive vitamin A, for instance, can harm your baby,” she adds, advising against exceeding twice the RDA of any nutrient during pregnancy.

Ultimately, with proper dietary choices and guidance from healthcare professionals, expectant mothers can support their health and the health of their babies effectively.
