Study Reveals Alarming Rise in Childhood Short-Sightedness

by Krystal

A recent global analysis indicates that one in three children now suffers from short-sightedness, or myopia, with worsening eyesight linked to increased screen time and decreased outdoor activities during the COVID-19 lockdowns. The study, published in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, analyzed data from over five million children and teenagers across 50 countries and found that short-sightedness has tripled since 1990, rising to 36%.

The highest prevalence is observed in Asia, where 85% of children in Japan and 73% in South Korea are short-sighted, compared to about 15% in the UK, Ireland, and the US. In contrast, Paraguay and Uganda report some of the lowest rates at around 1%. Researchers note that myopia typically begins in primary school and continues to worsen until the eyes stop growing around age 20. Contributing factors include genetic predisposition, early educational pressure, and the environmental conditions of different regions.

The pandemic has intensified concerns about children’s eyesight, with evidence suggesting a correlation between lockdowns and increased vision deterioration. By 2050, it’s predicted that more than half of teens globally may be affected, particularly girls, who tend to engage in fewer outdoor activities.

To combat the rising rates of myopia, UK eye experts recommend that children spend at least two hours outside each day, especially between ages seven and nine. While the exact reasons for the benefits of outdoor time remain unclear, experts emphasize the importance of regular eye tests for children aged seven to ten. Although myopia cannot be cured, corrective measures such as glasses, contact lenses, and special lenses designed to alter eye growth can help manage the condition. High rates of myopia could lead to serious eye issues in adulthood, raising alarms for future health outcomes.
