Expert Dermatologist Offers Essential Skincare Tips for Aging Gracefully

by Krystal

Dublin, September 13, 2024 — As the skincare industry becomes inundated with an array of products and trends, navigating a skincare routine that evolves with age can be a daunting task. Dr. Anjali Mahto, a renowned consultant dermatologist, recently visited Dublin to launch Eucerin’s new Hyaluron-Filler Epigenetic Serum and shared her insights on adapting skincare practices to the inevitable changes that come with aging.

In an exclusive interview with RTÉ Lifestyle, Dr. Mahto addressed the concerning trend of preteens using potent skincare products like retinol before it is necessary. She expressed her concerns about the pervasive belief that one can entirely avoid aging, emphasizing that “aging is a privilege” and advocating for a focus on aging gracefully rather than preventing it altogether.

Dr. Mahto emphasized the importance of a fundamental skincare routine, which she considers essential. “A solid skincare regimen is crucial before incorporating any advanced products,” she advised. Her recommended routine includes cleansing the skin thoroughly in the morning, applying a vitamin C or antioxidant serum, and finishing with a moisturizer that includes sunscreen. The evening routine should mirror the morning process, with an additional focus on cleansing to remove the day’s buildup of dirt, sweat, and pollution. Following this, she suggested using serums that aid in skin repair, such as those containing vitamin A, epicelline, or peptides, and applying a moisturizer if the skin is feeling dry.

Aging brings significant changes to the skin, particularly for women approaching menopause. Dr. Mahto highlighted that women lose up to 30% of their dermal collagen within the first five years post-menopause. To counteract collagen loss, she stressed the importance of sun protection, noting that UV radiation is a major contributor to collagen breakdown. Additionally, maintaining a balanced diet rich in healthy fats, selenium, zinc, vitamin C, vitamin D, iron, and protein is crucial. Reducing alcohol consumption, prioritizing quality sleep, and managing stress also play vital roles in skin health.

For advanced skincare treatments, Dr. Mahto recommended starting with foundational treatments such as vitamin A and retinoids, and progressing to more advanced options like laser treatments and microneedling.

Addressing a common misconception among individuals with darker skin tones, Dr. Mahto clarified that sunscreen is essential for everyone. Contrary to the belief that sunscreen is only necessary to prevent sunburn and skin cancer, it is also vital for protecting against premature skin aging and pigmentation issues.

Finally, Dr. Mahto reiterated the dangers of younger individuals using overly advanced skincare products. She warned that applying excessive active ingredients can disrupt the skin’s barrier function and lead to further complications. “It is essential for both parents and skincare brands to take responsibility for ensuring that young, vulnerable skin is not exposed to potentially harmful products,” she concluded.
