LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has disclosed the cause of death for longtime KTLA news anchor Sam Rubin, who passed away in May.
According to the medical examiner’s report, Rubin died from ischemic heart disease, with atherosclerotic coronary artery disease listed as a secondary cause. The manner of death has been ruled as natural.
Ischemic heart disease, characterized by reduced blood flow weakening the heart, increases the risk of various cardiovascular conditions, including blood clots, heart valve disease, heart failure, and abnormal heart rhythms, as explained by Advocate Health Care.
Atherosclerosis, a condition where arteries harden due to plaque buildup, can restrict or block blood flow to vital organs like the heart and brain, potentially leading to complications such as coronary artery disease, heart attack, and stroke, according to Cleveland Clinic.
Sam Rubin, who joined KTLA in 1991, was a prominent figure in Hollywood entertainment reporting, renowned for his coverage of red-carpet events and interviews with top celebrities about their latest projects.
His unexpected passing at the age of 64 on May 10 deeply saddened the KTLA newsroom, with colleagues expressing shock and sorrow during a broadcast announcement.
“The station is filled with great sadness,” said anchor Frank Buckley. “We learned the news this afternoon, just over 24 hours after he was here with us.”
KTLA 5 released a statement mourning Rubin’s death, describing him as a significant figure in both local news and entertainment, whose infectious laughter, charm, and compassion left a lasting impact on everyone he encountered.
“Sam was a loving husband and father, roles he cherished deeply,” the statement continued. “Our thoughts are with Sam’s family during this difficult time.”
Rubin’s legacy in Los Angeles morning television and his contributions to the journalism and entertainment communities will be remembered fondly by colleagues, friends, and viewers alike.
